HARRIERS FANS TEAM 5 WORCESTER CITY 3
Saturday 19th September 2009 |
The supporters of Worcestershire's finest met up on Saturday morning for their first ever meeting at a sunny Cookley playing fields on the outskirts of Kidderminster.
Despite missing a total of eight regulars Manager Dave Pountney still enjoyed the luxury of an 18 man squad. Dave 'the sofa' Ackerley, Adam 'one in one' Matthews, Sean 'the sheep' Merryweather, Dave 'Fat Tevez' Williams and Ollie '90 minutes' Sewell were all notable in their absence. Not much was known about our opposition who would be playing their first game of the season.
Harriers started as if they were the team playing their first game of the season with both sides giving the ball away regulary on a very hard surface and it was our visitors that enjoyed the early pressure. City took the lead after 10 minutes after a poor backpass by captain Mark Connolly was not dealt with by Brett Caufield in goal and the City forward finished. Against the run of play and in their first real passing move Lewis Pountney levelled the scores as his scuffed shot found its was in from the edge of the area.
However City once again took the lead after 20 minutes as poor marking in the area enabled the Worcester forward to turn and score from 10 yards. This seemed to wake up the Harriers who started to up their game and Adam Smith equalised again with a header from a corner.
After 30 minutes the first batch of changes were made and not long after Dave Pountney gave KHIST the lead for the first time with a goal from 8 yards after the City defender missed the ball. The half time whistle blew with Harriers holding an undeserved one goal lead.
At half time Manager Pountney again rung the changes and warned against complacency against a better than expected Worcester side. Soon after the restart it was the Dave Pountney who got his second after racing clear and scoring at the near post with a volley. The prolific Dave Greaves soon added at 5th with a fine header off a corner into the roof of the net.
With 30 minutes left changes were made once again and at this point the game petered out. Possibly down to the heat or the fact the game was won both sides struggled to gain any momentum. In fact it was Worcester who scored the best goal of the game with 7 minues left. The City forward rolled Ian Danby on the edge of the area before 'lobbing' Mark Young in goal.
Four games unbeaten for the fans team now who were pushed all the way by an impressive Worcester side who we will hopefully meet up with again.
Man of the match was awarded to Dave Pountney despite the protests of his team mates.
