STAFFORD RANGERS 1 HARRIERS FANS TEAM 2
Saturday 19th February 2011

The Harriers Fans Team kept their impressive run going with a fine win over their Stafford Rangers counterparts. A goal in each half from John Wenham and Jon Taylor proved enough to ensure a 2-1 victory to bring the current run to one defeat in 14 matches.

The squad, consisting of a staggering 21 players, travelled to Staffordshire for the IFA league encounter which meant 10 substitutions being made at half time. The team that took to the field in the first half managed to grab the game’s opening goal when John Wenham raced on to a through ball to beat the offside trap and coolly slot his shot past the advancing goal keeper. It looked like they might have held on to an important half time lead, but Stafford’s pressure eventually told when a succession of corners brought a deserved equaliser through a powerful header which nestled into the top corner.

With Stafford Rangers going into the second half with the momentum, the Harriers did well in the early stages to fend off the early pressure. Defending against the slope and on an increasingly heavy pitch, the Harriers slowly grew in confidence and it appeared that the mass changes at half time actually helped the visitors as the home side looked to tire. The Harriers seemed to soak up the pressure with ease and then threaten to hit Stafford on the counter attack with good movement from the front two of Marc Stones and Jon Taylor. And this is exactly what brought on the winning goal when the impressive Mitch Pearce played in Marc Stones whose shot was saved only for Jon Taylor to fire the winner from the rebound. There was more Stafford pressure to come and the Harriers might have counted themselves lucky when penalty claims were waved away after what looked like handball on the line, but they managed to see that game out for a deserved 2-1 victory.
