HARRIERS FANS TEAM 7 SOUTHPORT 0
Saturday 27th August 2011 |
The fans team began their home campaign with a resounding win over Southport.
Dave Greaves scored the first, latching on to Dave Pountney's flick-on to comfortably lob the Southport keeper from 12 yards out. Harriers then scored two goals in quick succession. Dave Pountney's quick throw found Marc Stones, who majestically back-heeled it into the path of Sean Merryweather to fire into the bottom corner for a well-worked goal for the second. Then just moments later, another neat interchange put Harriers 3-0 up. Mezza's through-ball found Dave Pountney, who played the ball across for Mitchell Pearce to score with an easy header.
Harriers picked up where they left off in the second half, and debutant Steve Thomas (or "Blobby" as he is affectionately known) had clearly had his Weetabix, encapsulating a dynamic all-round performance with a thunderous grasscutter from 25-yards out that found its way into the bottom corner for four. His second goal was less glamorous, however. Southport's keeper saved manager Connolly's point-blank header, only for Blobby to scramble home the loose ball from a number of millimetres.
Kiddy's free-flowing football resulted in more goals. Andy Morgan's right-wing cross was beautifully dispatched first time into the bottom corner by Greaves for his second to make it 6-0. Marc Stones finally got the goal he craved at the death, sort of making up for his failed attempt at an overhead kick earlier in the game, although it was the sort of goal that threatened to disfigure his looks in the process. A scramble in Southport's penalty area saw the ball bizarrely being whacked off Stoner's face towards the goal-line. The ball may have already gone in after the Southport keeper palmed it away, but Stoner made sure by tapping in the rebound anyway.
Unconfirmed reports are circulating that Billy Smart's Circus are planning to make a bid for Stoner before the end of the transfer window this month. A convincing win for Harriers against a useful visiting side who will feel unfortunate to lose by such a large margin.
