SHREWSBURY SUPPORTERS 4 HARRIERS FANS TEAM 3
Saturday 14th February 2009 (a) |
The fans team made the short trip over to Shrewsbury on Saturday to take on their supporters team. Following a 3-0 defeat earlier in the season a tough game was expected against a team top of the IFA supporters league.
Despite missing both first choice centre halves, Ollie Sewell and Mark Connolly, along with last season's player of the season, Tom Sharland, a 16 man squad arrived at the plush Shrewsbury Sports Village in good spirits.
Due to a shortage of defenders Manager Dave Pountney adopted a 3-5-2 formation in the hope of stifling the Shrews slick passing. After a tight opening with boths sides having chances it was the Shrews who took the lead from a free header from 6 yards to end hopes of a first clean sheet in 30 games! Harriers continued to press for an equaliser and were unfortunate to go 2-0 down after a scramble following a corner after half an hour. For the rest of the first half Kiddy struggled to contain the Shropshire side with goalkeeper Dave Ackers keeping the Harriers in the game.
At half time confidence was still high though due to the Harriers great team spirit and the knowledge that one goal would change the game. And it was the old campaigner Pete Lewis who broke free, following a pass from Greaves, to finish cooly under pressure to give the Harriers hope. The scores were soon level as after a period of pressure a dangerous corner was headed in by top scorer Greaves.
With our hosts on the back foot and struggling to cope with Lewis's dangerous corners and following a scramble Chris Lacey gave the Harriers an unlikely lead with just 18 minutes to go.
Both sides continued to exploit the extra space as both sides tired but it was Shrewsbury who levelled the scores after ANOTHER free header from 6 yards. Then with 5 minutes to go the Shrews snatched victory with a fine finish inside the area. Despite plenty of pressure Harriers were unable to find the equaliser.
It was a great game between two evenly matched teams with a draw probably a fair reflection on the match. The makeshift back three defended well but lapses in concentration continue to cost the team. Dave Ackerley, Lewis Pountney and Nathan Fox all had good games but Pete Lewis just edged it following a goal and assist.
