Veteran defender Ian Danby came to the rescue with a hat-trick as the Kidderminster Fans team picked up another victory away to Redditch.
With several regulars missing including utility player Mark Young who is awaiting the verdict on an internal disciplinary matter and Striker Dave Greaves reportedly grounded, a smaller than usual squad travelled to neighbours Redditch ahead of the senior teams cup clash with Corby.
Harriers started well and dominated the opening 10 minutes with some fluid passing but the opening goal came against the run of play when Steve Bird fired a perfectly placed header into his own net on the quarter hour mark. This seemed to derail the visitors and Redditch added a second on a counter attack as the Harriers defence looked at sixes and sevens. Kiddy at this point were clearly second best and could not find their rhythm. The harriers were handed a life-line though just before half time when Craig Martin and Dave Pountney linked up well to setup Ian Danby to pull one back with a point blank header.
The goal before half time was vital and proved a spring board for a Kiddy come-back. Harriers eventually found their rhythm and it took just 5 second half minutes for Kiddy to grab the equaliser when Steve Bird made up for his earlier error by curling in a sublime 25 yard free-kick. Harriers were by this time firmly in control of the game and went ahead through Ian Danby’s towering header via another Dave Pountney assist. Danby’s moment of glory then turned to a moment of history as he became the oldest player to ever score a hat-trick in Fans Team colours when he converted a spot kick to spark euphoria not seen since that infamous night in Barcelona.
The scoring was not over yet however, John Wenham added a fifth for Kiddy when he ghosted past the Redditch defence to slot under the advancing keeper and Redditch managed to add one of their own with a fine effort from distance but that only proved to be a consolation as the referee blew his whistle to end the game 5-3 to the Harriers.
