OXFORD UNITED SUPPORTERS 4 HARRIERS FANS TEAM 5
Saturday 29th December 2007 (a) |
Kidderminster Harriers fans team extended their winning run to five games and completed the double over their Oxford United counterparts in the process with a thrilling last gasp victory this weekend.
The teams were locked at 4-4 on the Tilsley Park Astroturf and the match appeared to be heading for a draw until stalwart midfielder Pete Lewis popped up with the winner just five minutes from time.
In truth the result was harsh on the hosts who were denied on numerous occasions by some fantastic saves from Harriers’ man-of-the-match keeper Mark Young.
Oxford opened the scoring early on but the visitors bounced back and a brace of goals from prolific striker Dave Pountney quickly turned the game on its head. And when Chris Smith headed in at the far post from Lewis’s free kick, the Harriers fans looked in complete control. Unfortunately, two defensives lapses allowed the home team a route back into the match before the interval.
Rob Hart gave away a penalty, which was successfully converted, and then an uncharacteristic error from veteran defender and Harriers director Wayne Allen let in the U’s fans to grab an equaliser.
Harriers regained the lead against the run of play midway through the second half when John Wenham headed Smith’s excellent diagonal cross over the home keeper.
However the visitors again failed to hold on to the lead and when Oxford scored their fourth goal of the day after a concerted spell of pressure, they looked the favourites to go on and claim victory.
But the Harriers fans dug deep into their reserves and Lewis ghosted in at the far post to meet player-manager Pountney’s cross and guided his header past the keeper to secure another fantastic win.
