Harriers hosted Motherwell on Saturday in the eagerly awaited British cup quarter final at
Lea Castle. KHIST fielding their strongest side of the season knew they would have to be at their best against a side who had recently clinched the IFA British league title and in the process remained unbeaten all season.
The home side started strongly and had the better of the opening stages. Richard Ward's long throw's caused problems in the visitors defence. KHIST looked strong at the back throughout the first half with Sean Merryweather and Dave Goode controlling things in the centre of the park but a lack of composure in the final third meant that Harriers didnt create much. Lewis Pountney came closest when his shot was well saved by the Well keeper.
As the half wore on Motherwell came more into the game as they started to recover from their mammoth journey but neither side really threatened either goalkeeper. Both sides continued to play some good football on a decent pitch.
With a change of goalkeeper at half time and a few positional changes Harriers once again started the half well and found the elusive goal. Another long throw from Ward was met by centre half Andy Morgan who scored his first goal of the season.
Harriers continued to look strong at the back and the decisive second goal came mid way through the second half when a through ball by Pountney was finished in style by Dave Greaves for his 13th of the season. With Motherwell throwing more players forward the Harriers defence remained strong to cement victory.
It was a very good victory against the strongest side we've met this season. Full credit to Motherwell for making the journey for 90 minutes of football and congratulations on their fantastic season. Man of the match was awarded to goalscorer Andy Morgan although many of the team put in creditable performances. KHIST will meet either Preston North End, Halifax or Hull City in the semi finals.
