MOSTYN RANGERS YOUTH 1 HARRIERS FANS TEAM 1
Saturday 31st January 2009 (a) |
We were on our travels yet again, albeit the short jaunt down the Stourport Road to face a young, Mostyn Rangers side. Manager, Dave Pountney decided to experiment and adopted a 3-5-2 formation.
Harriers started brightly, and after some good work on the right by Pountney, Wenham failing to convert the chance. Both sides failed to get a hold on the game with Sean Merryweather producing the best chance, trying his luck from 20 yards out only to end up going inches over the bar.
Pountney was pulled down on the edge of the area, and Harriers were awarded a penalty, to which Pountney stepped up, only for the keeper to guess right and save it.
The miss could have proved costly as a poor back-pass wasn’t dealt with well by Dave Ackerley and his clearance was charged down by an on running striker, who took time to move it onto his right foot and place it in the roof of the net. Harriers needed to get back into this game and it wasn’t long before Pountney made amends for his penalty miss, by slotting underneath the body of the on-rushing keeper.
The start of the second half, Rob Hart was given the role that Heskey plays, to try and hold the ball up top in search for a goal. Midway through the half, Hart was found unmarked at the back post, after some good work down the right, only for his goal to be disallowed for offside. Harriers were unable to break down a solid Mostyn side, and the ref blew for full time and penalties it was.
Harriers got off to a good start with Mark Young neatly slotting his penalty away. Ollie Sewell and Merryweather both put theirs away with Pete Lewis and Mark Connolly unable to convert. Two Mostyn players missed their spot kicks so it went to sudden death. It saw the nerves of the Harriers, as Wenham stepped up and rifled the ball over the bar and onto the Stourport Road. Mostyn missed their next one, which meant Harty took Harriers seventh penalty with the score being 3-3. The keeper however guessed right and saved it. With the following kick from Mostyn converted , Harriers succumbed to a 4-3 defeat.
Harriers have a weeks break before making the short trip to Shrewsbury on the 14th, where they hope to get revenge for a 3-0 defeat back in November.
