Saturday 18th June 2011 in Manchester - IFA Cup Semi Final |
Harriers made the journey north on Saturday to take on the Hull City supporters team in the semi final of the IFA British supporters cup at the neutral venue of Partington Village, Manchester.
KHIST once again fielding a strong side started the game well with the strikeforce of Dave Greaves and Lewis Pountney causing the City defence problems. It was no suprise when Harriers took the lead when Dave Greaves near post corner was met by Richard Hall who outjumped the goalkeeper.
Harriers continued to play all the football and should have made it two with more composure and hit the woodwork a couple of times. KHIST should have doubled their lead when Dave Greaves was fouled in the box. However Lewis Pountney's penalty was easily saved by the Hull goalkeeper.
The penalty miss seemed to spurr on the Hull side who started to get hold of the ball and started to look dangerous going forward. Harriers conceded their first goal of the whole tournament when Richard Ward lost the ball on the edge of his own area and the onrushing forward finished well.
At this point Hull were looking dangerous with the Harrier defence all over the place and it was no real suprise when Hull took the lead. The City forward attempted a chip that came back off the post only for the rebound to be nodded in.
KHIST started to re group after a poor 15 minutes and started to come into the game as half time approached. It took a wonder strike from Dave Goode to bring the scores level. The ball sat up around 35 yards out and his right foot volley, with the aid of a slight deflection, flew into the corner of the net.
Harriers continued to play some good football with City playing on the counter attack with a great deal of success. However it was Kiddy re gained the lead with 35 minutes left after Dave Greaves turned the ball round the corner for left back Richard Hall to poke home.
With both sides tiring on a big pitch it was Hull who once again got themselves back into the game with another wonder strike. Given too much time around 25 yards out the Hull proceeded to drill the ball into the top corner leaving keeper Brett Caufield motionless.
The all important decisive goal came with just 15 minutes left when Lewis Pountney beat his man again down the right before squaring the ball to Chris Lacey who prodded home from 6 yards much to his team mates delight.
Harriers managed to see out the game for a deserved victory against a good Hull City side. Man of the match was awarded to Richard Hall for his two goals from left back although the majority had good games. KHIST will now meet the winners of Preston North End or AFC Halifax in the final up in Leeds on Friday 22nd July in Leeds.
