HISTON SUPPORTERS 4 HARRIERS FANS TEAM 7
Saturday 12th September 2009 (a)

Harriers’ Supporters Team picked up an excellent  7-4 victory on the road at Histon this week, in a hard-fought affair played in the shadow of the Glassworld Stadium, making it two wins on the bounce.

Two of the squad had a much tougher journey than the rest. Dave Goode and Ollie Sewell decided to save their petrol money and walk to the game, setting off early on Wednesday morning. I had the pleasure of meeting them in Histon on Friday night (I also thought the journey was going to take three days with the A14 traffic), listening to Mr Sewell reveal all Harriers’ tactics to Steve Fallon! The twosome dusted themselves down to make it in to Dave Pountney’s starting line-up, who was evidently taking tips off Mark Yates, as he named his starting eleven in a 4-3-1-2 formation. Rumour has it though that some of the side are more useful at ‘playing in the hole’ than the rest.

The game started fairly evenly although Brett Caulfield in the Harriers goal was the less busy of the two keepers. Kiddy took the lead through a Dave Pountney strike and the second was added by Dave Greaves, but the honours were even at the interval, as a strong Histon midfield begun to boss the game and scored a stunning free kick which Ebbers feels he should have done more with in the wall! The scores were level at 2-2 as the proverbial half-time oranges disappeared.

With the Stutes making it 3-2 not long after the break, the game was turned on its head with a four-goal salvo from Pountney after the hour mark. Sandwiched between the nap-hand of goals which the manager poached was a stunning left-footed strike from yours truly. With the goal gaping from two yards, I managed not to stumble and slot home.

The excellent football Harriers were playing put pay to any hopes of a comeback from the disillusioned Cambridgeshire outfit, and the female left-winger that they introduced midway through the second period is probably still in Harty’s pocket, although rumours that she made the trip back to Kidderminster in the Astra are unfounded.

So another win on the road for the all-conquering fans team. Special mentions to Goody and Ollie for putting in superb performances after the 115 mile walk. Brett believes he was only beaten by ‘world-class’ efforts and Mav was his usual solid self at the back. The midfield was ran (occasionally) by Chris Smith and Greavsie unusually had to play second fiddle up top to Pountney, whose five goals earned him the man of the match award. Strangely, this decision was already made before I wrote this match report!

Histon is an excellent example of how to run a smaller club and their fans team were no different, so a big thanks goes to the Stutes fans who even dug deep for the charitable cause of Goody and Ollie’s walk, whilst buying us a beer after the game. Hopefully the lads will make it to Kidderminster for a game in February.

Onwards then to a home clash with Worcester Pity next week before the afternoon game with Gateshead. I take it the KDS will be turning out for this fierce Worcestershire derby and extra Police will be on patrol at Cookley. Miss it at your peril!
