Saturday 11th February 2012 - IFA Cup

After winning at Stoke City in the first round of the British supporters cup Harriers were given the daunting task of the long trip north to take on the Hearts supporters team fresh from a 6-0 first round victory at Brentford.

A party of 17 met up at Aggborough at 5am Saturday morning hopeful of another run in the cup. After eventually getting everyone out of bed the team made good progress to check in to the hotel before making their way to the 3G pitch on the outskirts of the city.

Harriers were given a warm welcome and started the game strongly with Greaves, Pountney and Thomas causing problems for the home defence. After numerous chances Harriers eventually took the lead when centre half Andy Morgan found himself free on the edge of the area and found the bottom corner in style.

Dave Greaves and Steve Thomas had good chances to put Harriers in control but were thwarted. However Hearts started to come back into the game and following a defensive lapse found themselves level as the ball squeezed between goalkeeper Dave Ackerley's legs. Kiddy were rattled and were soon a goal behind as another defensive mistake allowed Hearts to lob the stranded KHIST goalkeeper.

Half time came at the right time as despite Kiddy having the majority of chances had been made to pay for their lack of cutting edge combined with individual mistakes.

Following a few stern words from manager Pountney and a change of formation Harriers started the half well and soon levelled as Lewis Pountney bundled the ball in from a cross. From another ball into the Hearts box Kiddy went into the lead as the ball fell to Dave Goode's right foot in the box and the returning centre half finished in some style.

Harriers were now rampant and soon scored the best goal of the game as Dave Greaves held the ball up brilliantly before teeing up Richard Ward to finish in style. Even Ollie Sewell got in the act to make it 5-2 with a free header from a corner to surely put the game out of reach of Hearts.

However credit to Hearts who were straight back in the game with a third goal with 15 minutes to go. Then when Hearts scored again with just two minutes to go manager Pountney wondered if he had introduced Richard Millington too soon as Hearts got a fourth? Kiddy held on though to record a fantastic victory.

It was then back to the pub with the Hearts lads who proved to be excellent hosts all weekend as the squad enjoyed a shandy or two with our gracious hosts beofre returning Sunday afternoon. Harriers now await the quarter final draw hoping for a home draw.
