HARRIERS FANS TEAM 1 GRIMSBY TOWN SUPPORTERS 6
Saturday 8th August 2009 (a) |
The Harriers fans team kicked off the 09/10 season on a gloriously sunny morning in Cookley with Grimsby town fans visiting for a game on the way to there away match just down the motorway at Cheltenham. With gaffer Pountney stuck in the office the managerial role was handed to Mav who had a decent squad of seventeen to pick from.
Harriers started the half in bright fashion, looking to get the ball on the deck and move it around, numerous half chances were created, and with the pressure building it came as no surprise to see the yellows open the deadlock, merryweather picking the ball up deep in his own half skipped past one player before releasing a perfectly weighted ball over the top for Ash Jarvis to race past the defender to and lob the ball over the on-rushing keeper for a well deserved opener. Unfortunately, for the KHIST Fans, this was probably the only highlight, as for what to follow leaved players as well as spectators stumped. The slump set in when Ollie Sewell, reaching for a ball, and facing his own goal. Managed to wrap his foot around it, and swing in beckham esque delivery straight on to the head of the Grimsby striker for the most simple of finishes.
Words were had at half time about trying to play with the same tempo that the harriers fans had shown in the early stages. These words clearly didn’t regisiter as it soon became 2-1 to Grimsby, then 3-1, then 4-1, then 5-1, then 6-1! To be fair to the harriers boys, 6-1 was probably a little bit flattering to Grimsby, 3-1 probably being a fairer score line, but some excellent finishing and average defending allowed for the scoreline to become so embarrassing. Whilst no one had outstandingly poor games, you would struggle to name a man of the match, with pretty much 1 to 11 producing below par performances compared to usually high standards. Sean Merrywether probably was the least bad player on the pitch, and for some honesty when running the line giving a tight goal to the opposition for crossing the line probably just about shades it.
Harriers will look to forget this performance and move on quickly. Rumour had it Beckie Pountney threw her fans team season ticket in disgust at the management in an act not to dissimilar to one seen at carrow road a few hours later following a 7-1 home reverse for the canaries! The boys will be looking to repair the supporter/player damage with few next weeks.
