CAMBRIDGE UNITED SUPPORTERS 4 HARRIERS FANS TEAM 11
Saturday 29th March 2008 (a)
After an entertaining journey along the A14, Kidderminster Harriers Supporters’ Team continued their excellent season with an impressive 11-4 victory over Cambridge United Supporters’ Team, at a windswept Abbey Leisure Centre in Cambridge on Saturday morning.
Stopping at McDonald’s just an hour before kick-off was a rare delight for an extremely hungover Soupy, who filled his boots with a sausage and pancake breakfast.
After the 3-2 win at Exeter City last weekend, Harriers were looking for another win on the road and romped into an early lead, with Greavesie putting the visitors ahead, the first of a five-goal salvo for the in-form striker. The rampant form continued as some excellent build-up play from Harriers saw midfielder John ‘Shinpad’ Wenham put the Reds 2-0 up as the floodgates began to open, and losing ‘Old Man River’ Dave Williams to a hamstring injury early on proved no setback for the visitors. Are the sands of time closing in on this living legend?
A shell-shocked U’s side could only despair as Harriers opened up a five-goal lead, with both Greavesie and Shinners adding to their tally along with a neat finish from Dave Pountney. Some sloppy defending at the back cost Harriers dear though as they conceded three goals late in the first half, although Freebie was on target again as Harriers went in 6-3 at the break.
The late first half rally from the hosts proved to be a flash in the pan as Harriers stepped up a gear in the second period. Both The Sherminator and Pountney completed their hat tricks as the visitors eased towards double figures. Ben Grazier also found the net after some more excellent build-up play from the Harriers side, as influential midfielder Ipswich Harrier shrugged off his cockney accent to claim the star man gong. The defensive pair of Sewellio Iglesias and Stourbridge Lacey were eager to get on the scoresheet in the second period, but the gaffer made them stay back as far as possible, and even took Shinpad off as he closed in on his hat-trick!!
At this point I have to make a special mention to Harty. He surely had his best game in Harriers colours today, and apart from some rather worrying antics of taking pictures in the changing rooms (just like the old days Harty?) he seems to be improving well.
A fourth goal for Cambridge didn’t dampen Harriers’ spirits and a ninth win of the season was well deserved in another excellent team performance, and wins for the ‘real’ Harriers side on Saturday afternoon and both Harriers Trust sides on Sunday morning capped an excellent weekend for the Kidderminster football sides.
