HARRIERS FANS TEAM 1 STEVENAGE BORO 2
Saturday 4th April (a) 2009

The fans team entertained Stevenage in only their 6th home game of the season on a sunny morning in Cookley. Harriers went into the game without the services of player/manager Dave Pountney, with him passing on the reins to ‘Freebie’ Williams and the his assistant Mark Young.

Harriers adopted the 3-5-2 formation which had seen them yield five straight wins and a string of impressive performances. It was the visitors however, who started the game brighter creating a number of half chances with the Harriers struggling to get out of their own half. Harriers were not helped with confusion over who was playing where and what responsibility they had so it came as no surprise that Stevenage took the lead with 15 minutes gone. A Break down the left hand side was half stopped with the ball falling kindly to a Boro player who was able to swing a cross into the back post giving the striker the simple task of heading the ball across goal past a helpless Ackers and into the net.

The goal gave Harriers a kick up the backside, and with a few subs and positional changes Harriers got themselves back into the game with the ball falling kindly to Sean Merryweather, on as a sub, who was able to steer the ball into the back of the net with his first touch.

With Harriers resorting to a 4-4-2 formation at half time it was once again Stevenage who started the half the better and their possession was rewarded with a goal just after the restart, the Striker picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and was given time to place a shot over Ackers who was left grasping air as it went in off the bar. The game fizzled out into a scrappy affair with both teams struggling to string more than 2 or 3 passes together.

Harriers piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser and Greaves could consider himself unlucky not to get on the score sheet, creating himself many chances from nothing. Perhaps the best chance fell to assistant gaffer for the day Mark Young, who saw his header from a corner cleared off the line. With time running out Stevenage were able to defend fairly comfortably for the win in what was a poor Harriers performance.

The boys will have to pick themselves up and forget the performance as they move on to Crewe next Saturday on the way up to Altrincham.
